China's One Child Policy
China’s one-child policy had been controversial even before it was made law. Some see it as a flawed, though necessary policy; others see it as a barbaric form of government intrusion upon individual privacy.
In our talk, we try to understand why the policy was introduced. We will examine if it achieved its goals, evaluate its repercussions and discover what the Chinese people really feel about it. We will also address China’s population census trend today and how that will impact its future.
Appreciating Chinese Calligraphy
Some have said that Chinese calligraphy is the equivalent of English fonts.
Let us explain why they are wrong!
We will study the 3,000-year history of Chinese calligraphy, discover its links to Chinese character development, explore the stylistic changes through the years and conclude with a hands-on demonstration.
Chinese Culture & Etiquette
For many Westerners, the Chinese etiquette landscape is a potential minefield of bloopers and blunders.
Who knew that it could be polite, in any society, to belch with vigour at the dinner table? Did you know that to accept a compliment with a "thank you" is actually considered very rude?
Unravel the mysteries of Chinese manners and learn how religion, philosophy and history influence the Chinese people.
Our talk will help you negotiate the ins and outs of acceptable behavior in Chinese society, and help shed some light on why the rudest sounds can be music to the Chinese ears!
Chinese Tea & Tasting
Do you know that all tea comes from the same source: the Camilla Sinensis bush? While there are hundreds of varieties of Chinese teas, most fall into four basic categories, white tea, green tea, black tea and scented tea. In this talk we will introduce the 4 types of tea and regions in China, let you taste each of them and show you how to choose, prepare and enjoy a cup of tea in the traditional Chinese way.
